about

note:
With the memories of my recent trip to Southern California with my son Andrew still fresh in my mind, I’ve recorded a thematically related oldie here to go along with the song “Broken Together.” Most of you guys will recognize “Rob and Carolee” from the e.p. “Little, Big” which I co-produced with my dear friend and musical compadre Rob Watson; He’s the “Rob” in this little slice-of-life number, and together with his wife “Carolee,” serves as inspiration for a song which celebrates the many virtues of lasting friendships. A number of years have passed since I last stayed at my friends' place in Eagle Rock, but the incredible hospitality, warmth, kindness, generosity, love, and laughter which I found so comforting in past visits, remains a constant. It is truly a home away from home. I was especially thrilled to have Andrew with me, whom Rob hadn’t seen since my son was a child, and whom Carolee had never met. They all became fast friends; exactly what I intuited would happen.
While I’ve taken the liberty to make a few inconsequential adjustments to the lyrics, this current recording of “Rob and Carolee” is a reasonable facsimile of the demo I first played for Rob when we began to record “Little, Big.”

I’m driving up to Eagle Rock
To Rob’s and Carolee’s
The two of them have lots to do
Like busy little bees
But they’ve always got time to visit
They are gentle as a breeze
Some chips and a cold Corona waiting
Just as pretty as you please
And anyone who’s been there
Most certainly agrees
With faithful friends like this
Who has enemies?
So if you’re ever up by Eagle Rock,
It’s worth the trip to be
With friends like kin
And welcomed in
By Rob and Carolee
In the smokey conversation
On the hilltop balcony,
God is in the details
And the gentle revelry
Like me, they’ve got no money
And are always on their knees
But they’ve got the kind of wisdom
That puts a troubled heart at ease
And anyone who’s been there
Most certainly agrees
With faithful friends like this
Who has enemies?
So if you’re ever up by Eagle Rock
It’s worth the trip to be
With friends like kin
And welcomed in
By Rob and Carolee
Down the pitch-black hills of Eagle Rock
The road curves and serpentines
My headlights catch the movement of
The dancing cypress trees
And even dark roads lead us homeward
And I smile ‘cos I believe
I’ll always find a light on
At Rob’s and Carolee’s
