Note:
As part of Daniel Amos’s last tour, which may well be the very last tour the band will undertake, we had the pleasure of including “Donna” in our performance. This is one of my personal favorites, not only because it conveys an important truth, but because it’s a catchy little pop number with a chorus that stays with you. Those imposters, The Swirling Eddies, had ripped us off once again by mimicking our sound and style in recording “Donna,” but we would have the last laugh; we reclaimed what was, in essence, rightfully ours in the first place by performing it in public for what I believe is the very first time. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Camarillo Eddie!
“Hold Back The Wind, Donna” is something like a peak into a kind of transcendent behind- the-scenes reality, where a believer's choices and actions, (great and small/ good and bad), have made significant differences in both this life and the next, perhaps without he or she ever being aware of the fact. The idea is that even the smallest act of faith, while presently appearing somewhat weak and insignificant from our current point of view, may well possess both the weight of temporal and eternal significance in this world and the world to come. This is something like “the butterfly effect” where a distant butterfly flaps its wings, setting in motion the conditions needed to form a local tornado weeks later.
“Donna” is being encouraged to join us (the faith community) in fighting evil in the world by not underestimating her significance in the fight, especially because she is not being asked to fight alone. This struggle may appear to us at times as though it is futile, (like trying to “hold back the wind”), but we know in the end that victory is assured, love will prevail, and God’s kingdom will eventually be established in all its fullness and glory.
The choice of the name Donna is purely random and has no significance other than it being a two syllable name which I felt worked well with the cadence of the song.

lyrics

it's the little things you do
that you don't think break through
you build a mansion
with God's Son
you light a candle
and the kingdom comes
doesn't seem like much now
like you're the failing one
but hold back the wind, donna
hold back the wind, donna
stand in the breach with us, donna
and hold back the devil wind
it's the little prayer you pray
or the little lie you say
it's love and hate
but choosing love
faith winning out
against the odds
doesn't seem like much now
a losing cause
but hold back the wind, donna
hold back the wind, donna
stand in the breach with us, donna
and hold back the devil wind
the grass is breaking through
it's just a blade or two
up through the concrete
and the angels smile
will be a green field
in just a little while
seems like we're asking too much
from one little child
but hold back the wind, donna
hold back the wind, donna
stand in the breach with us, donna
and hold back the devil wind
yeah, hold back the wind, donna
hold back the wind, donna
stand in the breach with us, donna
and hold back the devil wind
the devil wind
